Minor cycles of maize and rice are in the harvest stage, with favorable prospects except in Valle del Cauca and Tolima where large areas of cropland have experienced poor vegetation conditions since the start of the cycle due to water deficits at the beginning of the cycle. Rainfall in the last month has been well above normal in all the country, which should have benefited the start of the new crop cycles. However, heavy rains have reportedly (ECHO Flash) caused damage in the western part of the country. Above normal rainfall is forecast until the end of May across the country (Copernicus C3S Multimodel). Colombia has been identified as a major food crisis country in the last edition of the Global Report on Food Crisis (GRFC 2024). The same report identifies weather extremes as one of the primary drivers of acute food insecurity in the country.
