June 2024
Following a timely onset of seasonal rains in the south, planting of the main season maize crop was completed in April and conditions of crops are favourable in the Maritime region and slightly below-average in the Plateaux region. Cumulative rainfall amounts since late March have been average to above-average in most planted areas, supporting crops at different growing stages. Planting operations for millet and sorghum are ongoing while planting of rice was completed in May. Below-average vegetation conditions are observed in the northern province of Savanes, where ca. 60% of the active crop area is affected by a greenness anomaly. According to FEWSNET (May 2024), “a climate of insecurity persists in the north of the country” and the poor crop conditions might be associated with this. In the Central region, crop conditions are less affected, as ca. 30% of active crop area is affected by a greenness anomaly. The Copernicus C3S Multimodel seasonal rainfall forecast for the July-August 2024 period indicates a slight tilt in the odds to favor above-average rainfall in the northern part of the country and average conditions elsewhere.
