Barley, rice and wheat are in the sowing stage. The maize (white) cycle is in the vegetation stage and maize (yellow) is in the harvest stage. In the past month, rainfall has been normal to above normal in most croplands across the country. This should have contributed to the normal establishment of cycles in the sowing stage. Vegetation conditions in cropland areas are average apart from large areas in Amazonas, Cajamarca, Lambayeque and Tumbes. This is likely explained by the
reported reduction in the area planted with cereals in these departments. The
Copernicus C3S Multimodel forecasts wetter-than-normal conditions until the end of April for most of the country, which should allow the normal progress of cycles in the areas that have been planted. The latest edition of the Global Report on Food Crisis (
GRFC 2024) presents Peru as a food crisis country in which weather extremes is one of the main drivers of the crisis.
