Mali

May 2025
The seasonal rains have not started yet and farmers are currently preparing their fields. Planting of the 2025 cereal crops is expected to start in June with the onset of the rains. In Sikasso where seasonal rains normally start in late April, good crop conditions are observed as cumulative rainfall in the last month has been ca.30% above-average. The Copernicus C3S Multimodel seasonal rainfall forecast for the June-August 2025 period points to average rainfall conditions across the country. According to a report from UNFPA, “Mali remains entrenched in a complex humanitarian crisis, marked by escalating security, political instability, and humanitarian challenges. In March 2025, armed groups intensified their activities, resulting in violent clashes, which led to significant population displacement”. According to the latest Cadre Harmonisé analysis (March 2025), more than 1.5 million people (6.5% of the population analyzed) are projected to be in critical acute food insecurity state (Phase 3 or above) for the period of June-August 2025. According to the same report, more than 2,500 people living in the Ménaka region of Mali will likely face a Famine situation (Phase 5). Livestock conditions are good as reported by the Afrique Verte International (Point sur la situation alimentaire au Sahel, May 2025).
